Ordered by fit for our group, not by prestige.
"If you only do one Etna winery, do this." Historic 1700s estate, Decanter calls it one of Italy's finest. Educational tour around centenary vines on Monte Serra, original lava-stone palmento, oak room, in-depth tasting with local food pairings. Tasting + lunch with their in-house chef/sommelier ~€140 pp. Open Tue–Sun by reservation; closed Mondays. Closer to Catania, paved estate, professional handling.
Family on the land since 1865. Owns the largest single vineyard inside Etna DOC. Standard 1h30: cellar tour + 4 wines paired with cheese and salumi. Tastings from €35 pp — most affordable serious-cantina option. Plenty of food. Strong English. Easy booking.
The "White Lotus" winery (S2 episode "That's Amore" filmed here). They've leaned into the connection: "White Lotus: Wine, Art and Landscape" experience with vineyard walk, 5-wine tasting + 3 olive oils. 1h30 tasting €65 pp; 2h30 with light lunch €95 pp. Easy to book online.
Sleek modern architecture into the volcano's flank. Art-filled tasting room. 30 hectares of pre-phylloxera vines (90–150 years). Their Archineri Nerello Mascalese gets compared to grand-cru Burgundy. Photogenic stop.
Founded by Marc de Grazia 2001 — credited along with Cornelissen with putting modern Etna on the global map. Vineyards across six contrade. Their Prephylloxera cuvée is a benchmark wine.
Belgian-born natural-winemaking pioneer. The "Magma" tasting (2.5h) includes vineyard visit + 6 different crus including Magma Grand Vin. ⚠️ Cornelissen wines are intentionally unconventional (oxidative, sometimes funky). Wine writers love them; wider audiences sometimes don't. Not a safe pick for the seniors if they prefer classic styles.
Founded 2004. Lower-profile online but consistently in best-of lists from Wine Spectator and Decanter.
Often paired in one-day tours through agencies. Cottanera requires advance booking; Passopisciaro (Vini Franchetti) is selective about visits.
Most groups do "Etna cable car + Taormina" as one big day. A potentially better alternative for our food/history-prioritized group:
This eliminates the most physically demanding part for the seniors (altitude, cold, uneven lava gravel) and replaces it with a substantive food/wine experience. Silvestri Craters give us the "we walked on Mt Etna" payoff for free without the cable car.
This is folded into Day 5 as Path B — go to the Wednesday page to see both versions side by side.
